Grimm :: Old Tales A'new

I've been watching this crazy show, Grimm since it aired on NBC a few weeks ago. Seven episodes into the first season, I am hooked on this great sci-fi crime show.

The show brings to life the old stories from the Brothers Grimm. The beautiful childrens stories like The Three Little Pigs and Rapunzel. The original stories are darker than the Disney movies we see today. Murder, lies and deception. All made into "moral teaching" stories to scare children into being 'good'.

The new NBC hit has combined the tales and centered the show around the "last Grimm". A cop on the hunt to find deamons that appear to be human. In a world of evil and darkness, these stories take on a new, criminal light.

This show is so much fun to watch. I love the combination of CIS and Charmed. That's really how I'm seeing this movie. The magic is wonderful yet suspensful. The violence is delicious and it makes my mouth water. I love the legends and lore that are included in this dark drama. That's one think I truely miss from the show Charmed, the connections to great mythical creatures and magical beings. It's nice to see a fun show come a long that leaves us wanting to know more.

Children's Television Programming

Why do Americans and television go together so well? We all love it, we obsess over it and we mold our lives to resemble what we see on TV. We all have our favorite stars, shows, movies and games. We all know that technology has come a long way, but it seems to me that the majority of this evolution has taken place in the "television" department. We've seen so many additions to television since the days of 2 stations in black and white.

But along with this television progessive evolution, our children are watching more and more telivision on a daily basis. Most children watch 2 hours of telivision per day until the age of 6. After 6 years of age, telivision consumption spikes to 4 hours in front of the TV PLUS an additional 2 hours of computer or video game usage.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that kids under 2 years old not watch any TV and that those older than 2 watch no more than 1 to 2 hours a day of quality programming.

So here's the thing. Kid's aren't supposed to watch TV but we know how convenient it is. Maybe I'm a horrible mother for doing it (or just admitting I do it) but my 1 year old really enjoys his TV time. We spend a lot of time cuddleing on the couch watching our shows. I'm sure he's unaware of the meaning behind what he sees, but he knows he likes it.

Not all television is bad either. There are a lot of great, educational shows directed at children. These shows and movies teach them skills with basic repetition and fun. For older children, it's also not a bad idea to let them see what is happening in the world. Watching (monitored) adult programming can expose children, in a positive way, to the real world. Teaching them social interactions that they can't learn in books. As with everything, it's all about the spin YOU decide to put on it!

My advice is to maintain a "healthy limit" of television time. No one, including adults, should be spending a majority of their time in front of the television. There are limitations, there are some days when we feel like being lazy couch potatoes. But we need to focus on getting our children away from the screens.

The Hunger Games vs. Twilight :: Battle of the Trilogies

Twilight, I don't get it. Vampires are great and I'm sure the fans will argue, but The Hunger Games is epic and will reign king of trilogies after all is said and done.

The Hunger Games movies are stated to be 4 movies of the 3 books, the same as with Twilight. But unlike Twilight, which was well received even though it had disappointed the details, HG promises to stick to the original story line.

The HG in itself is a powerful story of treason and loyalty. It teaches a more powerful lesson than the fantasy of Twilight. While the two stories share a similar love triangle, Twilight spends more time focusing on the lovers. Not until the end of the third HG book, Mockingjay, do we hear of Katniss' children.

hungergames-vf.jpg

The cast will also be very powerful. Jennifer Lawrence, who is set to play Katniss is in the same shoes as Kristen Stewart. A little known actress who is destined for stardom after the release of the first movie. Lawrence claims she doesnt want to reach the same amount of fame as her Twilight rival, but I'm forced to believe otherwise. I'm also waiting to see Woody Harrelson as Haymitch (one of my favorite actors) and Lenny Kravitz as Cinna (who I feel is a perfect choice).

"It's like part of Jennifer really wants to overtthrow Kristen as Hollywood's young darling, and she's more motivated now that their feud is pretty much out in the open," Jennifer's pal tells OK!.
In turn, Kristen, 21, like a good little vampire, went right for the virtual neck, biting into Jennifer's looks, branding her "plain," the pal says. "Jennifer isn't innocent, but it hurt when she found out what Kristen said," the pal says.

I could go on and on, but the fact is The Hunger Games is better than Twilight. There's no real competition. There is a human connection to the characters and story of HG that you can't feel with the flashy, very fake vampries.

Survive The Apocalypse

"The End Is Near!" Life as we know it is bound to change as we continue to destroy the very earth that we live on. An apocalypse can happen any day. Anything from instintanious nuclear fallout, to zombies, an asteroid crashing into the Earth, or the gradual spread of a life threatening infection. We can never know what the future holds, but preparing for the end of the world may help you survive the wastelands.
It's been the topic of books, games and movies for years. Is it all science fiction? We've seen devastation affect other parts of the world. Katrina destroying New Orleans, Hiroshima, the Thailand typhoon, 9-11. It's only a matter of time before the whole world is brought to it's knees. It may be science fiction for now, but in years to come the "great apocalypse" could be taught in high school history class!

Apocalypse
The sirens are blairing and whistles are blowing. People are running frantically trying to take cover. It's been a few days since the announcement, the apocalypse was coming. The time is here, and chaos is spreading rapidly.

How It Could Happen
There are a number of popular ways fiction writers kill off the majority of society.

  • Aliens - They probe us, take our resources and blow up everything.
  • Disease - Chemical or Viral. A disease spreads rapidly and picks off the weak.
  • Ecological Catastrophe - The world will freeze or over heat causing a new ice age and flooding from melting ice.
  • Human Decline - The population has declined from many reasons. Lack of reproduction is possible.
  • Impact Event - A major collision with another celestial body.
  • Monsters - Zombies, the blob, Godzilla.
  • Social Collapse - The economy goes to shit and everyone is left destitute.
  • Sun - The sun explodes or super heats.
  • Supernatural - Demons, the rapture. Generally religious beliefs coming true.
  • Technology - Robots become smarter than humans, are stronger and have bigger weapons.
How To Survive

So, what can we do to prepare for an inevitable doomsday? We can start by delving into some of the great works of art, depicting possible apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic outcomes.

  • Go underground. If you have enough time, build an underground bunker and stock it with necessities.
  • Arm yourself. Any useful weapon will help. Even if it's a crowbar! You'll need it for zombies, aliens, monsters and thieves.
  • Gather equipment. Flashlights, candles, lighters, tools, fire extinguisher, food and water.
  • Wait. The best and really only thing you can do in the beginning is to wait it out. Even after the initial disaster, sit still until the smoke has cleared and you're out of immediate danger.

   Post-Apocalypse
The outside world has calmed down, and you've decided it's time to come out of hiding. You open the door to a strange new world. The air is probably polluted still, but the immediate danger is over. The sky has been tinted red and the landscape is dry and barren. You can't be the only survivor, there has to be more people somewhere. How are you going to survive.

What To Look For
There's no doubt that there will be things you need to learn about the new world. Places to avoid, safe houses, how to find food and barter your goods with merchants and traders.

  • The first thing you are going to want to do is pack up all of your essential items. Water, weapons and armor.
  • Locate other people. Cities are going to be more populated. Try to colonize.
  • Avoid the wasteland. Odds are there are rogue warriors out there that are going to try to kill you and swipe your shit. Not to mention potential wild beasts
  • What types of currency are people using now? Figure out who has the items that you need.
  • Who's in charge? You're going to want to either obey them or kill them and take over.

How To Survive

  • Use your senses and look out for elemental disasters. Is the air polluted, the water? Is there fire or earthquakes. Consider finding an airmask, fire extinguisher and ways to filter water.

  • Gather, loot and steal. No matter how you get stuff, you're still going to have to work for it. And the more stuff you have, the better your chances of survival.

  • Weapons. Make shift knives and guns constructed of leftover junk are great options.

  • Harness the sun. Solar power is very usefully to charge up flashlights and basic electrical equipment.

  • Pick a side. Are you going to be the villain or hero? You have to claim respect one way or another.

  • Make friends. Trust will be hard and everyone will be jumpy. (Be sure to announce yourself when you enter a room.) The more friends you have, the better off you will be.

  • Transportation will be limited. Invest in a good pair of shoes and find something to ride! Horses and bicycles may be your only option at this point.

  • Learn to fight and make use of your weapons. You'll have to use them to defend your territory and to`ill wildlife, either for safety or food.

  • Procreate. It's the end of the world, she'll sleep with you now.

    Ozzy on The Talk

Ozzy Osborne was interviewed by his lovely wife Sharon Osbourne and the other members of The Talk today. He sat proudly beside his wife, and have joking conversations with the rest of the ladies from the show. He was there to promote his new book, "Trust Me, I'm Dr. Ozzy"

Julie Chen congratulated Ozzy on the announcement his son's, Jack, new engagement and baby on the way. Lisa is Jacks new bride, Sharon says they met Lisa's mother the night before and it went very well. They were "well behaved" even though they were nervous that Ozzy would say something inappropriate. When asked about what advice Ozzy would give to his son on being a father he replied, "Join a rockband and go on the road."

Julie asks how Ozzy started writing and giving "medical advice". He tell a story of a man that he knew. The man asked Ozzy one time, "me and my wife had good sex for 7 days a week and now we only have sex 4 times a week" and now the man wanted to know if it was "normal". Ozzy told the man to "stop complaining" because he was blessed to be 60 years old and still having sex at all.

Sharon says that Ozzy had his genes traced to find out who he was related to and what, if any, health markers they may find. The test results showed that Ozzy was related to Stephen Colbert and King George the 1st. The test also showed that there were no known health risks in this blood line. Ozzy commented, "I really didn't know what [the test] was about, and Sharon wanted to find out about the history of Alzheimer in her family"

Discussing Ozzy's health he says that he "goes to the gym every morning for the past 10 years" and is now a vegetarian. Julie Chen asked how long he had been a vegetarian, he replied "a week" and gave a cheeky grin. "The actual reason I decided to cut out meat and dairy is because I'm limited to what I can have on the road, burgers are everywhere." I think he meant that it was a healthier alternative to the burger and fry joints that are so abundant. He goes on to say that he is "not going to do it forever."

Ozzy also a considers himself to be a "self proclaimed hypochondriac". "So many men are ignorant to what really goes on." One of his friends asked him "what is a prostate" he said "go to the doctor", the man asked "how do they check for that" and Ozzy replied "I'll give you two guesses."

There was a special video message from Dr. Oz who asked Ozzy how he managed to still be alive after all the crazy things that happened to him. Ozzy blames it on "luck".

Before he left the show, the ladies asked if he had any advice on not smoking, "tobacco is the most addictive substance out there, just quit." Ozzy, who was once known for his bad ass ways, is now a non smoking, veggie eating, author. Funny how things change. It just goes to show that we all get better with age.

    Gloria Steinem on Chelsea Lately

Gloria Steinem, the feminist leader, appeared on Chelsea Lately tonight. Before the show began host Chelsea Handler, acknowledged how excited she was to have such a powerful and inspirational female figure on her show.

She appeared to promote her HBO Film "Gloria, In Her Own Words." While there the two discussed their views on being childless women. Steinem says she is "completely happy not having children" and that "everybody with a womb doesn't have to have a child, like everyone with vocal cords doesn't have to be an opera singer." She said that she was happy for Chelsea to choose the same path as she did, and to focus on their own life instead of having children.

Chelsea says she would make a child so unhappy. Then goes on to tease that she gave birth to Chuy.
Gloria worries about Chuy because he is in the corner by himself. She says that she "wonders if Chuy chose to sit by himself?" and Chelsea responds that she "chose where to put Chuy... in an area that he would stand out." The crowd laughed of course.

There was also a small discussion about the current conditions of America's tax crisis. They discussed a metting with Warren Buffet at an event. Buffet believes that millionaires and billionaires should pay taxes at the same rate as the middle class. Chelsea agree that " people that make more money should pay more money."

The documentary is all about women. It appears on HBO and you can get more of Gloria Steinem's work in her magazine Ms. magazine.

    Kaley Cuoco on Ellen

Kaley Cuoco was on Ellen today. I absolutely love her. She's 25 and stars on the CBS hit show Big Bang Theory. I've grown to love this show for its charm and wit. While it pokes fun at geek style and nerdisms, it also aims to improve the stereotypes. Nerds aren't as obscure these days. They still play WoW and love Star Wars, but now they can get the attention of the hot girl next door, Penny.

She entered the set to the song "Boom boom boom" by the Black Eyed Peas". And while she was there she disclosed some personal information about her family and their opinions of her recent nude photo shoot. The pictures appeared in Allure magazine. Her dad, who is always on set with her and has recently got his own directors chair, didn't know about the pictures until her mother told him. Her conservative mother found the pictures from a Google Alert.

Since recovering from a knee injury she received while horseback riding, she was left in a cast on the show for a few episodes. The show has now picked up syndication and reruns are being broadcast on local and cable channels.

Kaley is currently seeing someone now although she did not tell who it was. Apparently she has an exciting dating life. One guy took her own a date and didn't even know who she was until a bunch of girls saw her and got excited. Supposedly it didn't work out because he wasn't prepared to be involved with a celebrity. At least he was honest and apparently interested in her for more than just her fame!

Catch Kaley Cuoco on new episodes of The Big Bang Theory, Thursday nights at 9pm. Check listings for other times.

We Need More Pink In Sports

The coaches and teams have all been wearing pink lately. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, as we are all told every year. Talk about beating a dead horse, those Breast Cancer People can be annoying. But it is respectable when you see them making an effort to support a female issue.

    Varsity-Pink-Uniforms.jpg
    pink football uniforms

So it made me start thinking, why don't any sports teams wear pink on a regular basis? Why is pink such a feminine color that men won't even consider putting it on their sport jerseys unless it's for a special occasion.

It's kind of sad that pink is hated by male sports teams. It's just another example of female oppression.

I dare a team to change their official colors to pink and purple... or even pink and black! Pink needs to be respected more. We need a pink revolution!

    Big Brother and AGT Finale

OK - In Season Finale Mode.... Big Brother - WOOHOO SOOOO glad to see Rachel win. I loved her since last season and

while I think she's a whiny brat, there is something I love about her. She's a fighter and a great player. Brandon's a douche.

and Americas Got Talent - I totally think there was some rigging going on. Maybe that's because I'm jealous, but I don't see

how Landau could have beaten out BOTH iLUMINATE and Silhouettes. I knew PopLyfe was out, the totally messed up last

night and their style was horrible. Think Jackson 5 with Janet as the lead singer. I think that iLUMINATE would have been

the best choice for the winner. They had a style all their own and the concept was far-out. It was futuristic, bright and the

dancing/choreography was brilliant. They had people on trampolines. So... America obviously has a skewed view of what

    "talent" really means!!

    In Remebrance

It's 9/11 today. 10 years ago I was in 7th grade history class. The teacher(can't remember her name, she was one of the teachers I hated) turned the TV on. The whole class was confused, like the rest of the world. It was labeled an accident at the time. Then we saw the second one. The next week was intense. People were crying, praying, questioning. Some friends lost uncles and relatives. Some people had parents who went to the site to work and retrieve bodies. It was a very solemn time. We will never forget. And we should teach our children of this day. The racism involved. And teach them to be respectful of those who are different, and forgive those who sin against us! God bless. Bless our troops, our firefighters, police and families affected and who are still affected by America's tragedy

    Kim Kardashian Weds Kris Humphries

I am totally not impressed by Kim Kardashian's wedding last weekend. I've always enjoyed watching the Kardashians as my secret window into the lives of rich reality stars. Their attempts at ratings are often accompanied by a few laughs or gasps. Nothing I wouldn't expect from a scripted ratings phenomenon. The wedding was flashy, tacky, star studded, and lame. Supposedly guests stayed until late and staff were getting impatient. I don't truthfully believe this wedding is legit. Kim K is so jealous of her sisters. She truly is a self-absorbed, alcoholic waiting to happen. She should be with Scott! And we all know Humphries is in it for the money. Why do we watch this crap again? ... oh yeah, cause it's still entertaining!
